George's Story
My Great Uncle, George Oliver, was born in Munslow, Shropshire in 1885. George was married to Alice Amelia Cartwright. George and 'Millie' had one son. George joined the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry (date unknown). His service number was 16316. He held the rank of Private and served in the 7th Battalion. He is recorded as serving in (1) France: He landed overseas on 28th September 1915. The 7th Battalion of the KSLI were attached to the 76th Brigade. The 76th Brigade formed part of 25th Division. They fought in France and Flanders in September 1915. On the 15th October 1915, the 76th Brigade moved to 3rd Division. On 19th October 1915 the Battalion transferred to the 8th Brigade within 3rd Division.
He died of his injuries
I have looked at the battles fought by the 3rd Division in this time, and have found the 3rd Division named in combat in Feb-March 1916, and again in March-April 1916. The area of around these battles was known as the Ypres Salient. Actions of the Bluff (14th February - 2nd March 1916). Actions of St. Eloi Craters (27th March - 16th April 1916)
He was injured during battle, and moved to a Military Hospital at Etaples, as this area was away from the fighting on the front line. He died of his injuries on 8th April 1916 - just over 6 months after landing in France. He was aged 31 years old. George is buried at at Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
