John's Story
John Butler joined in Stratford East London in August 1915 as part of the 8th battalion Rifle Brigade.He as a packer who came from Wall End East Ham.His battalion trained in southend in 1915 as part of a reserve battalion part of the 14th division.John Butler was one of the first men to die on the first day tanks were used against the germans in the battle of flers courcelette.He was part of C Company on the the first companies to attack pint trench along with the first tanks and was killed as his battalions orders reveal.He was not found and his memory is at thiepval memorial
