Tom's Story
Tom Hartland was the youngest of seven children born to my Great , Great, Grandparents Henry and Annie Hartland on the 14th March 1893, then living in Rowley Regis near Birmingham.

The family moved to Smallthorne near Stoke on Trent in about the 1900 where Tom eventually enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers
Tom Hartland was killed in France on the 30th July, 1916 at Trones Wood whilst serving with the Royal Fusiliers. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provided the following information.
"Sargent Tom Hartland, number 1937, serving with the 23nd Battalion of Royal Fusiliers died on the 30th of July, 1916, aged 23 years. Sargent Hartland has no known grave but is commemorated by name on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium".
The servicemen of the Royal Fusiliers are commemorated on panel 3 of that memorial.
