Tom's Story
Tom Hartland was killed in France on the 30th July, 1916 at Trones Wood whilst serving with the Royal Fusiliers. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provided the following information.

"Sargent Tom Hartland, number 1937, serving with the 23nd Battalion of Royal Fusiliers died on the 30th of July, 1916, aged 23 years. Sargent Hartland has no known grave but is commemorated by name on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium". The servicemen of the Royal Fusiliers are commemorated on panel 3 of that memorial.
He was the son of Henry and Annie Hartland of Oldbury, Birmingham. He was born at West Bromwich and enlisted at Stoke on Trent when the family moved to Smallthorne Staffs.
