Frederick's Story
Fred was my grandmother's youngest brother. He was rarely mentioned by her, as a child I knew she had lost several relatives in the First World War. I always felt it was too painful for her to talk about. Through research into family history I found that he had been killed at the Battle of Jutland, the only naval battle of WWI. He was a stoker aboard HMS Queen Mary, his age given as 23 but in reality was only 16. The ship was sunk at 4.30pm on May 31st 1916, one of 14 to be lost that day, there being only 8 survivors from his ship. There is no grave but he is commorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
