James's Story
10356 Pte (L/C) James Malone, 12th Bn. East Surrey regiment , was my grandfather. He served in France having been recruited on 19 October 1915. He won the Military Medal, cited in London Gazette (2nd Supplement) Tuesday 22 July 1919. The actual medal was stolen from his son Bill when he was taken prisoner by the Japanese in WW2. James went on to serve in N.Africa and Italy in WW2, even though he was too old to serve, and ended his military career in the NAAFI. He died in Leeds in 1960. He had a piece of shrapnel in his left leg and, as a child, I was fascinated when he allowed me to feel it !
