We only learned of Gordon's story recently

Captain Gordon Byron Brookes, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, who fell on September 16th 1916, aged 37, was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Warwick Brookes of Manchester, and brother of Mr. Warwick Brookes, MP for Mile End. Educated in Brussels, he adopted the stage as his profession. He received his commission in November 1914, and accompanied one of the first battalions of The New Army to leave for the front. he saw hard fighting for over a year, and was recommended for the DSO earlier in September 1916. This is the actual obituary for my relative, G.B. Brookes. He was awarded the Military Cross posthumously, and fell during The Battles of The Somme at Flers-Courcelette. His name is recorded on The Theipval Memorial, France. We only discovered him and learned his story recently.
