Herbert George John's Story
My granfather joined the war on 16 January 1916, previously he had been in the Metropolitan police force. He was part of the RNAS and served on board the President II and the City of Oxford. He records that he went to Scapa Floe and Rosyth and that on 24 November 1916, Jellicoe joined Beatty on the Iron Duke for a few days. Although my grandfather survived the war, he fell down some steps on board the President II and broke his back - he was in RN hospitals at Queensferry, Roehampton and Chatham for 3 months. After that he always walked with a stick and had a calliper on his leg - and my dad, who had been born in 1915 remained an only child!
