Edward's Story
he wrote about his life being saved and then was killed the following year
In May 1915 my grandfather Edward Waring wrote to the Coventry Graphic relating how his tin of tobacco saved him from a snipers bullet. We still have the tin and the bullet but sadly that was all my grandmother had left of him. He was killed at the Somme the following year on July 15th 1916. His body was never recovered, but as his name is etched on the Thiepval Memorial, we like to think he lies beneath one of the graves marked: 'Known Unto God'.
