Albert's Story
He was a great favourite with us all on the H.Q. 173 Infantry Brigade
Before the War Albert Jacobs Was a baker. In July 1915 he married Kate Pritchitt, but spent most of the rest of his life on service in France. In May 1917 their daughter was born, at about the same time Bert suffered in a gas attack. Bert was overjoyed with the baby and his beloved Kate sent photographs to him. He had leave at the end of 1917, but had to make the dreadful journey back to The Somme in January 1918. Tragically, Bert was killed somewhere near Chauny on March 22/24 during the Spring German Offensive. In a letter to Kate his friend said that, "Bert was killed by a bomb dropped by a Boche bomb plane. We had just come back from taking a hand in the big scrap in which Bert took part and stuck it well as he always did. He was a great favourite with us all on the H.Q. 173 Infantry Brigade and his death is a great blow to us all. Your one consolation is that he died 'doing his bit'"
