Soldier Record

An act of gallantry whilst on service with the Dorset Regiment in Egypt has deservedly gained for Pte. Frederick William Sweetapple of 18 Victoria Terrace, Pound Street, Poole, Dorset the coveted award of the Military Medal. The official announcement states that the award was made "for bravery on the field under heavy shell fire," and supplementing this we may add that Pte. Sweetapple saved the life of an officer who, wounded, could not get back to the line, and was brought in by Pte. Sweetapple. Joining

up in 1914 Pte. Sweetapple who also saw service in the Boar War, went with the Dorset to India and after a few months was sent to Egypt, where he has been ever since. He is one of five soldier sons of Mr William Sweetapple and the late Mrs Sweetapple of Heckford Park, Poole. His brothers being Pte. George Sweetapple (Hants Regiment) serving in Mesopotamia, twice wounded; Pte. William Sweetapple (Hants Regiment) serving in France, three times wounded; Pte. Isaac Sweetapple (4th Dorset Regiment) wounded in France, now at Netley, and Stoker Charles Sweetapple (R.N) serving on the High Seas, once torpedoed.
