Owen Rhead's Story
My great grandfather Owen fought not only in WW1 but also in the Boer War. He joined the army in 1901 aged 18 and worked his way up to Lance Corporal over the years.
He served in India, South Africa and France.
He received the Queens Sputh Africa medal sometime between 1901 and 1919.
Owen was on the front line during the battle of the Somme and was present at the Christmas day truce at La Chapelle d'Armentieres.
He also stormed the Hindenburg line crossing in September 1918.
During his army service he married and had 5 children. In 1947 he was a pit engine winder.
I never got to meet my great grandfather sadly but I'm immensely proud of him, surviving not only one conflict but two. He was one of the lucky few that got to come home to take care of his wife and children.
