My father was a Private in the London Scottish

My father volunteered in 1914 at the age of 22 but because he was the sole support to his mother he was not immediately recruited. In 1915 he joined the London Scottidh Regiment and was sent to France where during the time he was there, he was twice wounded.He said that because he wore the kilt it was easy for the medics to make injections. On one occasion he found a lady's purse which had some gold coins in it. This he handed into some official office but he often wondered whether it was returned to the owner. I know little of his experiences except that at one time he was adjudant on board a vessel sailing soldiers to France when it was bombed but managed to reach France.I believe this may have been in 1917. Whether this was after he was commissioned into the Pioneer Corps I do not know. He was sent to Jesus College, Cambridge, as an Officer Cadet and where he earned his Commission as a Lieutenant. Most of the above I have found in letters written to his mother whose maiden name was Rattray. Hence my father joining the London Scottish.
