James Yule's Story
Great Uncle James was born in Northfleet, Kent, the younger son of William Gill Yule of Aberdeen and Louisa Ellen Yule of Rochester, Kent (nee Hatch). Mother remembers her uncles - William Gill Yule junior and James Yule - going off to war - she would have been four years old. One uncle gave her a charm bracelet and the other a white pomeranian puppy.

James was killed at the age of 22 on 9th April 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. We are not sure what happened to William Gill Yule - Mother said he was wounded during his service in World War I and that he took his Thames sailing barge the Gill Yule to Dunkirk to find survivors. According to her, he contracted pneumonia and died soon afterwards - in around 1940-1941. James and William had 5 sisters, only one of whom married. According to Mother, the others lost their fiances during World War I.
