Peter Roy's Story
On Remembrance Sunday, this is who I think about. Peter Alexander Roy was the oldest boy in his family. His younger brother Norman died in the Dardanelles campaign in July 1915. They were very close. My husband's father was the only male child left and he was too young to fight.
Killed by the flu epidemic
Peter was in the Royal Naval Reserve. Eventually he served on HMS Sobo at Scapa Flow, supplying submarines. He survived many hazards at sea only to die in the Invergordon Naval Hospital from 'flu on February 23rd 1919. What makes me so sad is that he was only just 30, the same age as my son now. he died with none of his family with him. They must have been so sad. They received his body back for burial and he lies in Cathcart cemetery in Glasgow. My husband and son both carry the name Peter. One of so many, many lives wasted in war.
