John's Story
John was my grandfather's cousin and his photo was found when researching our family history. Sadly no-one survives who knew John but his photo and the details of his service in World War 1 has been circulated to the wider De Courcy family and he is not forgotten.
John Thomas Albert De Courcy 1896-1914 has a special place in our family history
John was only 18 although the army records his age as 19 on his death certificate. John was a rifleman and was posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and crossed to France with them on 13 August 1914. He was killed in action on 17 September 1914. The 2nd Battalion War Records show that on 17 September they were fighting at Chemin des Dames, near Cerny.
John has no known grave but is commemorated on the La Serte-sous-Jouarre memorial on the north bank of the Marne. He was awarded the 1914 Star and clasp, British War and Victory Medals. We don't know what happened to these.
