Alfred's Story

Alfred Bradshaw (my Great Uncle, brother of my Grandad on my Mothers side) He died on 4 Oct 1917 and is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery. 'Tyne Cot' or 'Tyne Cottage' was the name given by the Northumberland Fusiliers to a barn which stood near the level crossing on the Passchendaele-Broodseinde road. The barn, which had become the centre of five or six German blockhouses, or pill-boxes, was captured by the 3rd Australian Division on 4 October 1917, in the advance on Passchendaele.

1/Lincs were part of 62 Infantry Brigade, 21st Division. On 4 Oct 1917, the first day of the Battle of Broodseinde, the division was in Polygon Wood.

The War Diary is in the National Archives at Kew in file WO95/2154.

From the Lincolnshire War and Victory medal rolls that 20465 Alfred Bradshaw was originally with the 8th Lincolnshire's before he was transferred to the 1st lincolnshire's.
