Charles's Story
Our great grandmother Winifred, (known as nanny Bessie) who lived in Northam in North Devon would sometimes speak of her younger brother Charles, to my brother and I.
Great Great Uncle Charles Edgar Lamprey born 27/12/1897 died 31/05/1916
Charles Edgar Lamprey was killed in the First World War. He was an Ordinary Seaman (J37470) on board HMS Invincible. He died on 31 May 1916, during the Battle of Jutland, his ship was blown up.
Our great grandmother remembered the last time that she saw her brother Charles when he was home on leave, she remembered waving him off and saying goodbye, she said that Charles seemed to know that this may be the last time they saw each other and said to her he did not think he would see her again.
My great grandmother related this story to us when we were children back in the 1970's, she always recounted this story with much love and fondness.
