Hubert F's Story

I found out my great Uncle was involved in world war one quite by accident as a child, when I found his service medals. I asked my Nan, but she just said he was killed in the Great War. Since my Nan's death I have now inherited my great uncle's medals. Hubert Fredrick Jolly was in the 1/15th London Regiment, and was killed on 15 October 1916. This is the same date as an attack on the Butte du Warlencourt by the 1/15th so presume this is where he was killed - but have found no concrete evidence to support this yet.

Family never talked about him, but discovered war medals in my Nan's drawer as a child.

On checking online, I have discovered that he was originally inlisted into the 3/15th Civil Service Rifles. This was a training regiment based in the England. He was transferred to the 1/15th in 1916, I presume after the terrible slaughter that the 1/15th received at the capture of High Wood in September 1916. This means he was killed less than a month after arriving in France. He was not quite 21 years old.

I also inherited a rememberance scroll to him, saying that he is remembered in the Warlencourt Cemetery, but recently I have been given another letter, dated 1921, saying that his grave was moved by the War Grave Commission. I plan to visit his grave soon to lay flowers and am sad to believe I will be the first family member to do so. I have no photo's, nor other information, but have read the little information there is about the battle at Butte Du Warlencourt - at most there is 3 lines about it in the 1/15th Regiment Historical records. That makes it even more sad to know that had I not found the medals of this young man's sacrifice would be forgotten forever. I will try to find more out about Hubert if I can, but will remember his name each year on November 11th.
