George Henry's Story
I never knew my Great Grandfather, nor did my father or my grandmother, he was killed in action on May 31st 1916 aboard HMS Defence during the battle of Jutland. History says that the ship was hit by a salvo fired from a German battleship, while changing course to sink SMS Wiesbaden, the first salvo hit the ships magazine leading to some spectacular explosions, this was closely followed by a second salvo which hit forward, Hms Defence sank very rapidly with the loss of all hands, some 903 men.
I do have my great grandad fathers medals and papers, and several papers received by my greatgrand mother on the death of her husband, sadly i only have the one photograph.
I recently visited the Royal Marines Museum at Eastney Portsmouth, which is where my Great Grandfather was based, it was a real humbling experience to walk the same corridors that he did.
