Robert's Story

When Robert volunteered to serve his country he was 37 years old. He was sent to France in 1916. In one of his last letters home, he talks of getting to know his new baby daughter soon. He never got the chance. A Red Cross letter to his wife confirmed that he was killed by a gunshot near Ovillers, France, but there was also a strong possibility that he had been struck by shrapnel too.
