Walter Harold's Story
I am greatful to record detail of my Grandfather who was a Gunner with the 59th. Division Ammunition Column of the Royal Field Artillery and serving at Ypres when he was killed on 21st September 1917. He was killed with three colleagues, when a direct hit from German Artillery hit the Ammunition he was conveying to the guns. All are buried at Birr Cross Roads Cemetery on the Menin Road, Ypres.
"The lads here call me Uncle Wally"
The above quote he wrote home to his wife MAUD, as he was one of those older Volunteers, being 37 at the date of his death. The young lads looked up to him and regarded him as a kindly father figure who was well liked. This was reflected in the letter from his commanding officer to his widow.
He joined up under his mothers maiden name -Poulter, as he had previous service in the Navy, which he had previously joined as an under-age boy. He was told that by using this name he would be entitled to a greater pension entitlement for longer service in due course?
His headstone is inscribed with the surname POULTER, but BWGC records correctly record his death as Son of Mr. & Mrs. Bucknole(Poulter), husband of Mrs Maud Bucknole of Kingston-on-Thames.
