Edward Francis's Story
My grandad, Eddie Fowell will always be a hero to me. Many a time I sat by his side as he mended watches, amazed at the way he was able to manipulate tiny components with a hand that was hooked, partially closed due to a shrapnel wound sustained on the 9th April 1918 in the churchyard at Bailleul. Bailleul was practically detroyed by german artillery and the church in whose ground Eddie was wounded is now the War Memorial.
As I understand it, Eddie lied about his age to join up and after pinching a weekend pass was sent to the "front" as punishment.
Wounded at Bailleul he was attended to first at the Australian Hospital at Wimereux before being shippe back to England to convalesce at East Leeds Hospital.
Never forget those who fought, those who fell and those who carried the scars for the rest of their lives be they phyiscal or mental.
