Soldier Record

My Grandfather died when I was two years old, and although I never got the chance to know him properly, I am very proud of the fact that he served in the first world war. I believe he fought in Ypres, but know for certain he was involved in the battle of the Somme in Northern France. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry for rescuing an injured comrade who fell under enemy fire in no mans land. He also fought at Mametz wood and my Dad told me that my Grandad had a tiny piece of wood that came from Mametz that he brought home with him as a reminder of the time he spent there. He was one of the lucky ones that came home at the end of the war. Whenever I go to France on holiday, I always stop at one of the cemetries to pay my respects to the fallen and remember my grandad's bravery. One day I willl go to Mametz Wood and leave flowers there in his name......
