Thomas's Story
Private Thomas Lawlor was my great grandfather and so my memory is one that has been passed on to my via my grandmother and mother. My great grandfather almost survived the First World War. He was killed on 18th September 1918 at The Battle of Epehy, only 8 weeks before the end of the war. The battle was nearly over and my great grandfather went back to help the wounded. In doing so he was shot and fatally wounded.
Upon receiving the telegram which reported his death, his wife, my great grandmother, screamed when she opened it. He left behind a 27 year old wife and 3 daughters under the age of 8. We still have his army number tag which he was wearing at the time, but his body was too mutilated for burial; he is remembered at the Vis-en-Artois memorial which lies between Arras and Cambrai.
