William's Story

Picture of William Ellis likely to have been taken in late 1915 early 1916 outside a boarding house in Blackpool whilst undertaking basic training prior to leaving for France.

4524 Private William Ellis was born in Wigan but was brought up in Liverpool. He lived at 72 Beacon Lane, Everton. He enlisted in the 9th Battalion Kings Liverpool Regiment on the 13-11-1915. In his civilian life he had worked as a flour packer in a mill.

He is likely to have undergone basic training in Blackpool and eventually left for the front after embarking at Southampton on the 25-06-1916 and disembarked at Rouen on the 26-06-1916.

He joined the battalion at the front line on the 06-07-1916. He took part in action at Guillemont and was involved in an attack at Cochrane Alley on the night of 12-08-1916.

He was injured in this action with machine gun wounds to his left wrist and side and was moved to casualty clearing station 21 at Corbie. He died of his wounds two days later on the 14-08-1916. He lies buried in La Neuville British Cemetary at Corbie.
