Ernest's Story
My Gt. Uncle Ernest was the youngest son in a family of six and he was killed six weeks before the Armistice was signed.
In those days no-one in the family could afford to visit his grave in Northern France. I would have liked to visit to pay my respects but I am now too old, not for the actual journey, but to walk round the many graves.
It was devastating for my Great Grandmother who was already widowed, her husband having been killed in an accident in the stone quarry where he worked.
When I watch TV and see the carnage I feel very bitter about the
senior officers supposedly directing operations from their safe havens many miles away from the actual battlefields.
