William Gilbert's Story

William never spoke much about his experiences during the war.

William was my grandfather. He died when I was a teenager.

I was very close to him and he always had a slightly sad air about him.

I have since found out that he was injured at the Somme and he held the rank of Captain.

After he'd been in hospital, after an anaesthetic, he told me he'd dreamt of his time in the war and the fighting and people dying around him.

I have been told that he had shell shock and suffered severe depression in the thirties.
