Frank's Story
My Great Uncle.
Enlisted at Northampton on 14th September 1914.
He received treatment for a gunshot wound to his chest on 13th July 1916 and rejoined his Battalion on 19th July 1916.
Killed during an attack on Guillemont Quarry on 18th August 1916. Like thousands of his fellow men, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial.
His brother Private William Herbert G. Axford, 21808, Royal Army Medical Corps, served in Salonika until invalided home in December 1918.
Married Ethel K. Vaughan in 1916 and lived at 11 Washington Street, Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire. They had one child. Madge who was born in 1916. Frank never had the opportunity to see and hold his daughter but he knew he had become a father.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
