Charles's Story
Charles was my Uncle he was killed when he stood on a land mine near Arras France 1916 aged 23
I have no memories of my Uncle as I was not born until 1943. I have always imagined standing at his grave and putting flowers down in his memory and to somehow tell him he is not forgotten so far from his home and beautiful country, he was a gardner more used to using his hands in a loving way not with a gun in his hand it must have seemed like hell, or as you would imagine hell to be, so young such a waste of a precious life, my grand parents were so proud of him marching of to serve his country along with my father who was in the Royal Engineers in Mesopatania my father returned a broken man, and never spoke of the war. My aunts boyfriend never returned a whole generation of young men were lost in one way or another, death or heartbroken from the horrors seen and the taking of lives!!
