William's Story

Lance Corporal 52003 William MacDonald DCM was my father's eldest brother. Excerpt from London Gazette 5 December 1918:

"With another man he rushed and captured an enemy machine gun post under heavy fire, thereby permitting his platoon to advance. The machine gun nest contained a team of twenty two of the enemy and four machine guns. The daring and spirit of the charge completely upset the nerves of the garrison, and when three had been killed the remainder surrendered. He then turned one of the captured guns on another enemy party causing casualties."

William died on 25 October 1918 just before the end of the war and I was the first member of the family to visit his grave in Abbeyville after some 80 years. I felt very proud for the whole family.
