Jack Edward Fayers's Story
Like his older brother William (who was killed on the Somme in 1916), Jack joined the Suffolk Regiment at Ipswich in 1914 when he was just 17. His first spell of active service was between May and July 1916, when he was wounded and shipped home. On January 1st 1917 he returned, and on August 9th was reported killed in action near Monchy. In fact he had been badly wounded and taken prisoner. When he was repatriated after the armistice, he underwent lengthy treatment at Queens Hospital in Sidcup for the severe and permanent facial injuries that he had suffered. He was finally discharged from the army in December 1920. By this time he had married, and he settled in Wigginton, near Tring in Hertfordshire.
