William Henry's Story

My Grandfather was 23 when he was killed in Salonica 21st April1917. My mother was 2and9 months and her sister was only 4 months old. They grew up without their father but he was kept alive in their memory by reading the letters he sent to their mother. It was all they had and their mothers reminiscences, for they had no photo to recognize him by, except they knew he had had red hair. To read his letters was a joy to them and when my mother married in 1940 she placed her wedding bouquet on the towns local War Memorial in remembrance of her father and to make him part of her special day.I now too treasure those letters and still keep them in the same battered tin my Grandmother lovingly placed them. William was only 23 when he died but he lives on in the Grand Child, Great Grand Children and Great Great Grand Children alive today
