Frederick J's Story

Called to war aged 32 leaving wife and two sons at home

A peaceful man, having trained as a baker in Chesham, and became an insurance agent in Waddesdon. Posted to France in 1916, where he fought on the Somme, and with his regiment pushed eastwards to Ypres in 1917. He was killed in action on 16th August 1917, the first day of the battle of Langemarck when his company advanced over the river Steenbeck in the middle of the front line towards their objective of Springfield farm. They were caught in heavy machine gun crossfire and shelling with only a handful reaching their objective. Frederick perished in the mud with many colleagues. He has no marked grave, but is remembered at Tyne Cot, and on the Aylesbury Market Square memorial.
