Alfred's Story
alfred lever had no need to volunteer as he was 37 yrs old and worked for Doulton,s of Lambeth as a kilnsman. Having been goaded into taking the king,s shilling by his local publican joined up leaving a wife and five children and one on the way. He enlisted 15th March l915 and subsequently was sent to the front on 22nd May 1915 after training with 6th battalion. The battalion fought bravely at the battle of the Hooge and was sent to rest in Ypres in the cellars of St. Martins Church but whilst there was bombed by the Germans on 15th August. During the bombardment rescue parties were sent in but Albert Lever was one of the fatal casualties 20 men in all. He is burried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetry.
