John Thomas's Story

Taken from John T. Hughes Diary:

"Wednesday October 13th 1915. Hulluck

Attack 2pm. our section in second line-We lay down a few yards over the parapet, immediately we advanced half right. I was hit in the chest-right side.A wounded man passed me but behind our front line, I didn't see him again.

I lay till Friday morning during which time I was struck in the hip, right shoulder and middle back.

Essex regt. men, told by a wounded Stafford that others were probably lying injured sent out search parties. I was carried back under machine gun fire to Vermelles Clearing Stationl"

He returned to France the year after the attack, had awful frostbite, and more injuries, survived the war, and later became a Methodist Minister.
