Frederick's Story
A Son's memory of his father.
My Father was 4 years old when his Father returned from the Front to attend his sister's funeral. He didn't get home in time for it. Initially my father was scared of him as he came to the door in his army uniform all covered in mud. Apparently my grandmother burned it, but I don't know how he managed to get a new one. On leaving to go back to the front my grandmother and father were in the train carriage saying goodbye and my grandfather hugged his son and said "Goodbye son, I won't be seeing you again". My father only told me this story shortly before he himself died, so he had lived with that all those years. My grandfather died on 5th October 1917, I'm not sure how but he is buried in a small cemetary at Godewaersvelde near the Belgium/French border. Coincidence - my own son now lives just an hours drive away from the cemetary.
