Ernest William's Story
Sapper Ernest William Wilber M M 156268 160 Tunnelling Coy was killed along with seven other man of 3 Section on 15 11 1918 at Epehy when engaged in clearing roads in forward areas and removing delay action mines which had been left as booby traps by the Germans which explode killing the seven man wounding three man one dieing of his wounds at a later date.
It must be remembered that the killing did not end on 11 11 1918
Ernest William was awarded the Militray Medal 16 April 1918 by the Corps commander of VII Corps for the action that took place on 21 March 1918 at St Emille during the great Geaman offensive
when Nos 2.3 and 4 sections maned the front line trenchs were relived that evening and joined HQ at Hamelet and fought as infantry and caused about 200 casualties to the enemy.
The situation had got so desperate that the Re's had to fight as infantry
Ernest William left a wife Sarah and eight children aged between 2 and 18 at the time of his death
