Joseph Hughes's Story

A wonderful Christian man who, by the grace of God survived the horrors of WW1

Joe served along the Western Front, being wounded on 21 March 1918. The man standing next to him in the trench, Serjeant Bobby Orr, MM and Bar was killed. At one stage Joe passed his brother Fred, my Grandfather, who was serving in The Sherwood Foresters, on a train. They were going in opposite directions and hadn't seen each other for two years. They just happened to be hanging out the carriage window at the same time. Coincidence or divine intervention? Both Joe and Grandad survived the war, Joe being awarded the Chevalier de Legion d'Honneur in 1996. Lovely man but then they all were.
