Sam's Story
Sam (PO/894 (S) was in the RMLI Cyclists Coy. The eldest son of Isaac and Charlotte Landey, (one of his brothers served in the Hampshires at Soissons). Sam enlisted in York in April 1915 & was sent to Gallipoli with Kitchener's reinforcements aboard HMT Andania on 9th May 1915. He helped establish one of the first Bombing Schools. The Cyclists were also taught how to use catapult bomb throwers & trench mortar weapons, using anything they could -including 'Ticklers' Jam tins- as ammunition. Sam died of dysentery - the Gallipoli Trots - only a few weeks before evacuation was ordered, after surviving 5 months there! He was originally buried at Kephalos on the island then known as Imbros, at the 25th Casualty Clearing Station, but was moved to the Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Row K Grave 42.
'I am now on the Gallipoli peninsular and have been under fire' - June 1915
He was 5'5, fresh faced with dark brown hair. He had a small scar on his left eyebrow and a mole on his right cheek. RIP. We will not forget you.
