Patrick's Story

My great grandfather Patrick Reynolds was one of thousands of Irishmen who joined in Great Britain's fight against Germany in World War One.

He joined the Royal Navy in 1898. He was aboard the Vivid II when World War One started. Unfortunately I don't know a great deal about him except that he was a Petty Stoker. The final ship he was on was the HMS Cassandra which was sent into the Baltic to operate against the Bolsheviks. However, sadly on the 5th of December 1918 it was on on it's way home and it ended up in an uncharted German minefield where it struck a mine off the Gulf of Finland and sank.

I will always be very proud of my great grandfather and would love to find out more about him. His son, my grandfather, followed in his footsteps and went on to serve in the Royal Navy during World War Two.
