Harold's Story

Harold Hilton was born 1894 in Hooley Hill Lancashire (now part of Tameside). When he joined up he did so with his brother, John William Hilton. They were both assigned to D Company 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, and shipped to Mesopotamia. On 22nd September 1917, during an attack at Sanniyat, in support of the main attack at Dahra Bend, the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders crossed no man's land and occupied the Turkish trenches. Harold was killed most probably with a direct hit from a shell, while his brother survived. Harold's body was never found.
