George Millar's Story
My great Grandad joined the Royal Scots in 1914 as part of the British Expeditionary Force. He lived with my Granny and 5 kids in 2 small rooms in a slum district of Edinburgh. One reason for joining up was that if he was killed, my Granny would get a war pension which would be a regular income. He sent home to my Granny a series of postcards from one of the troop ships (the White Star Line) then from France. Here are extracts:
4/11/14."Dear Beccy-I sail this afternoon for Somewhere."
6/11/14 "Just a note to say I arrived in france."
then on 11/1/15(to my mother)"Dear Ena, ...tell your mother I was asking for her and if you see her crying, tell her you will give her a fat ear...Ha Ha. The picture on the postcard is a little girl saying her prayers for her father at the front. I hope you say yours too. Ta ta dearie. From your loving father."
He was killed at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle on12/3/15.His body was never found and he is commemorated on the memorial at Le Touret. What a waste.
