William's Story

Dr William O'Brien of Inish Mor was posted to the Dardenelles. He was assigned a batman. When the batman arrived it turned out to be his younger brother Frank who had run away to join the Brittish Army. William and Frank, whose real name was Conor both served in Egypt. Frank (aka Conor) O'Brien went on to fight in WW2, dying in the Chelsea Pensioners Hospital in or around 1966. William went on to marry my grandmother and set up in General Practice in Woodhouse where he married my grandmother who had been imprisoned in Germany (Alsace/Lorraine) in the early months of WW1. Her name was Mary Catherine Maher. She and her sister, Florence aka Alice Maher worked for the war office in London upon her release.
