Daniel's Story
His mother 'put her head to the wall and died of a broken heart'
The postcard from the front was sent home in 1916 and was used to sculpt the memorial statue. The Duncan family used to own a jewellery shop in New Street, Paisley. It was a very large family. Danny and his brothers and sisters were cousins to my granny and great aunt. When ever The Great War was mentioned, the story of Danny and his mother would come up. Danny was his mother's favourite son. He joined up in 1914 and fought in Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine, and France before being killed at Sequhart France. His mother learned of his death as everyone was celebrating peace. It somehow made it worse that he had survived so long only to die when she thought he was safe. She 'put her head to the wall and died of a broken heart two months later'. The sculpture in Paisley cemetery commemorates a mother's love and loss.
