John's Story
John was born in Ashtead Surrey where his father was a coachman for the local Vicar. In 1901 John was working as a railway engineer living in Polstead Suffolk where his father was born. He died in the battle of Polygon Wood Passchendaele Belgium on 27th September 1917. He is remembered on the Tyne Cot war memorial panel 51. His service number was 391973 (formerly 5181 indicating he was serving in the Army before the outbreak of war.) His regiment was the 9th Lodon Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles).
