Harry's Story

Harry Gough

Harry Gough was a Quaker and gardner from herefordshire before serving with the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry during World War I. Harry joined the 5th (Service) Battalion KSLI in August 1914 and became part of the 42nd Brigade, 14th Division. Harry landed at Boulogne and saw action at Ypres Salient in 1915; the Somme in 1916, at Arras and in the 3rd Battle of Ypres in 1917 before the 5th (Service) battalion was disbanded at Jussy on 4th February 1918. Mentioned in Douglas Haigs despatch of 9th of April 1917 Pt Harry Gough was awarded the Military Medal and comissioned in the field after bringing in troops under heavy gunfire during the battle for Vimy Ridge. Harry finished the war with the 4th (TF) KSLI and then saw service in Ireland with the 2nd Battalion KSLI.
