Henry's Story

My grandfather, Henry Doyle, from Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland, a private serving with the 12th. Battalion, Manchester Regiment, No. 16744, died at the Battle of The Somme on 7th July 1916 aged 38 when his daughter, my mother was aged 4. His medal record card indicates he was awarded the Victory, British and the 15 Star campaign medals. Under the remarks column of the said medal card it starkly states 'death assumed'. He entered the theatere of World War 1, France, on 17th August 1915, advancing to the front during the preceeding eleven months. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier & Face 13A and 14C and with a photograph and inscription in a local commemoration book of the time, called 'Coatbridge and The Great War'.
