James's Story

James McCowan was born in Glasgow on the 9 September 1897, the son of Alexander McCowan (d.1940), a Sanitary Inspector, and Mary Clow McCowan (1870-1954) (maiden surname Cameron). He was the great-nephew of Professor Murdoch Cameron (1847-1930), of Glasgow University, pioneer of the cesarean section and cousin to the Reguis Professor of Midwifery at the University of Glasgow, Professor Samuel James Cameron (1878-1959).

As a medical student aged 17 he enlisted in the RAMC (T) later joining the South Wales Borders, King's Shropshire Light Infantry. As a Second Lieutenant he was killed on 16 June 1918 during the German Offensive begun in April 1918. He is buried at Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil, France.
