Arthur Henry's Story
My Mother's brother served in the Machine Gun Corps from the outset of war until he was killed three weeks before the Armistice. My Grandfather did not speak any foreign language but he went to France in 1919, travelled somehow from Calais to Courtrai in Belgium and walked the area. He finally found his grave in a field near Harlebeke and he met the farmer who had buried him and his three companions. The bodies were eventually re-intered in the New Military Cemetery in Harlebeke by the CWGC. My grandfather made several more visits. I took my mother and her sister to visit the grave in 1980 and I have made two further visits aided by Ian Alexander and the War Research Society.
